Study Description

Torino Village was founded to support a nearby coal mine. However, the mine was soon exhausted and in a few decades the town was abandoned. I became interested in Torino Village because my great-grandfather William Carrington was a coal mine engineer who lived there with his family. Torino became a ghost town and now lies at the bottom of the Braidwood Nuclear Power Plant Cooling Pond. The goal of this study is to connect people with the history of Torino Village and the lives of those who lived there.

Timeframe

The study will focus on the time period from the 1906 to 1920.

Population

There were 514 residents recorded on the 1910 US Census for Torino Village, Will County, Illinois, USA.
