Study Description 

This is a social study of the house which before becoming Shapwick School was home to the Strangways family for over 400 years. The Strangways played a big part in the local area challenging, looking after the interests of the village and challenging the local authorities when work needed doing to maintain the area.

Henry Templer Bull Strangways was a premier (politician) in Australia and was pivotal in setting up one of the regions in South Australia, His daughter Sophia was involved in the suffragette movement and financed talks and transport for the ladies of Somerset to join the demonstrations in Hyde park and Oxford Street
