I have been a student at Heckmondwike Grammar School since September 2016, and as my last day approaches, in the 125th year of the school’s existence, I have become interested in its unlikely history. Embodying the Victorian and Edwardian splendour of Heckmondwike, the school was built by a now long-defunct institution, the Heckmondwike School Board. It has lasted for 125 years through wars, direct challenges to its existence, and numerous educational reforms. Yet, it still embodies the motto and spirit of its pioneers – Nil Sine Labore or Nothing Without Work..
