Whitekirk Village One-Place Study

Whitekirk is a small village located in the County of East Lothian, in the south-east of Scotland. It is about 30 miles east of Edinburgh, and located between the coastal towns of North Berwick and Dunbar. In 1969 the village was designated a conservation area and has several A and B listed buildings. Although Whitekirk was almost entirely a farming community, residents in the village now come from a diversity of backgrounds.

My study will be looking at the village during the first half of the 1900s, initially focusing on the Edwardian period, to explore the life of the residents and the gradual change from a mostly agrarian community to a more diverse community.

I am interested in this village and the larger Whitekirk Parish as four generations of my family lived, worked and went to school there. I will be starting my study looking at land ownership and the occupations of people living in Whitekirk Village, starting with the 1901 Census and the 1903 Valuation Roll for the village.
