Study Description

Hayton is in Bassetlaw in the north of Nottinghamshire. At the time of Domesday, it was within the Hundred of Oswaldbeck. The village has a moated site at Hayton Castle Farm and a church dating back to the late 1100s and possibly earlier. The Hayton Castle area has long been thought to be the residence of the de Hayton family, who held a landed estate centred at Hayton for a number of generations. The study aims to build an understanding of the village and its residents from before 1066 up to around the building of the Chesterfield Canal in the 1770s. A history of Hayton from 1765 onwards currently exists. A publication on the history before this date would be a good possible outcome of the study.
