Study Description

I choose Frosterley as this was where my grandparents lived. I had known that my grandfather worked in the local lime quarries but when I began to study the 1911 census I realised how dependent the village was on the Lime Industry with 76% of all working men involved in the industry. I also noticed how little information there is on who owned, ran the quarries and worked in the local area. I am looking to improve the knowledge in this area and in particular to list all the local lime quarries and kilns where the people from the village worked and at what dates the production ceased and what then happened to the workers.

Timeframe

1850- 1911 initially, moving later as the closure dates of the working are established.

Population

1911 Census shows 968 people living in the village.
