Are you getting excited about ‘All About That Place’ yet? We are! The event will run from Friday 27 September to Sunday 6 October, and talks will be recorded so you can catch up later if you’re not around when the talk is shown.

If you’re new to All About That Place, it’s a free 10-day online international event focusing on place-based research, with 14 bite-size talks each day. A talk is released on the hour, every hour, from 7am to 8pm (UK time). You can watch them all, or dip in and out as you choose.

Each day will kick off with a task chat at 6:30am where the theme of the day and suggestions for research will be discussed. There will be a free workbook which will guide you through the optional daily tasks.

Maybe you’re interested in the history of somewhere your ancestors lived, the place where you live now, or somewhere you feel an affinity for. Perhaps you already have a one-place study and you’d like some inspiration from the abundance of speakers to add to what you already know?

The overarching theme this year is “Your Ancestor’s Place in History” and this year we’re interpreting ‘place’ a little more broadly. It could mean place as in a street, village or town; an ancestor’s place in history; or their place in your family tree. The daily themes this year are:

  • Friday 27 September: Introduction
  • Saturday 28 September: Health & Medicine
  • Sunday 29 September: Military & War
  • Monday 30 September: Town & Country
  • Tuesday 1 October: Leisure & Entertainment
  • Wednesday 2 October: Innovation
  • Thursday 3 October: Politics & Rights
  • Friday 4 October: Collections & Archives
  • Saturday 5 October: Tools
  • Sunday 6 October: Conclusion

Pacific Edition

This year sees the addition of a new ‘Pacific Edition’ of All About That Place for the Americas and Pacific region, courtesy of Projectkin. These Pacific Edition sessions will start at midnight UK time; in the Americas, that’s 4/7pm Pacific/Eastern Time. Asia and the South Pacific are a day ahead so there it will be  7/9/11am AWST/AEST/NZ (+1 day).

Projectkin will host five live sessions, each an hour long, in which two speakers will both give a 10-35 minute talk. The audience can attend live, so there will be an opportunity to interact with the speakers and audience.

The five Pacific Edition sessions will be held on 27 & 28 September and 1, 3 & 5 October. Please note - you will need to book to attend the Pacific Edition talks - you will find the booking link on the Itinerary page on the Society of Genealogists website.

Prior to All About That Place, on Wednesday 25 September at 6-7pm UK time, Simon Davies of WeAre.xyz will be talking about his perspective of one-place studies. You can read more about Projectkin and the Pacific Edition of AATP here and you can book a place at Simon’s talk here. For those of you not familiar with Projectkin, you can find out more them here.

All About That Place is a community in itself!

You can interact with the speakers or other attendees on social media, either within the designated Facebook group (click here to join) or by posting on social media using the hashtag #AATP24. One of my most treasured memories of last year’s All About That Place was the incredible sense of community which developed around it - there was such a buzz about the whole event!

Did you start studying a particular place after last year’s All About That Place? Were you inspired to follow up any of the themes from last year, or any tips from any of the speakers? Let us know in the comments or via social media (#AATP24) or perhaps you could even write an article for Destinations or our blog - it doesn’t have to be long!

I’ve created myself a printable version of the itinerary, and I’m going through it ticking off my ‘must-watch’ talks - which is most of them! I’m also revisiting some of the talks from last year, many of which are still available on the Society of Genealogists’ YouTube channel. I’ve recently started a new one-place study and this year I’m really excited to follow the theme for each day and complete the tasks in the workbook for my new study. One thing’s for sure, this year’s All About That Place will be even more amazing than last year!
