Study Description

Soon after the end of the Civil War in 1865, African Americans in Montgomery, Alabama built a community that became known as Centennial Hill. This community’s residential and business districts encompassed a forty-block section of Montgomery and held a variety of stores, schools, churches, and businesses.

My maternal grandparents lived and met in this community. It was while researching their lives there before they moved to Detroit in 1919, that I became interested in their friends, neighbors and community.
