Study Description

The TheyHadNames.net website is a study of the pre-Civil War African American population of Liberty County, Georgia, USA. The study contains abstracts and transcripts of documents naming enslaved and free African Americans, with over 37,000 references so far (early 2023) to named people, as well as studies of particular enslaved and enslaver people and families. Due to the loss of the 1890 U.S. federal census, the study also includes selected records from 1880-1900 to help descendants trace their families back to before the Civil War.
