New Minden is a farming community in Southern Illinois founded by German immigrants from Westphalia and Lower Saxony (the area around Minden, Germany). Most arrived in the U.S. in the 1850s and 1860s. They established St John’s Lutheran Church. At one point the town had a mill, a post office, a hotel, and a tailor and clothing shop, but the town suffered tornado damage and causalities in 1896, 1907, and again in 2013.
