Study Description

1901-1950: A New Mexico “ghost town”. This town is named after John Barkley Dawson (1830-1918), who purchased the land (3,700 acres) from his friend, Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell (1818-1875), for $1,000. Two of the deadliest coal mine disasters in the United States occurred here: 1913 (263 killed)/1923 (123 killed)
