Study Description

The current Embassy of Australia in the United States, built in 2023, is a stunning architectural masterwork. It occupies Square 181, Lot 162, in Washington, DC – the same site as its predecessor, a rather sterile “typical” purpose-built office building of the 1960s. This study examines the history of Square 181, Lot 162 (aka 1601 Mass Ave) and the historic structures that have lived here. This study is the first in a series of studies of the places where foreign missions are and have been located in and around Washington. Each study will be published as a YouTube video with a short companion article.
