Study Description

The Diggings began with the discovery of gold in 1861 and for a time was populated by many miners and their families. Coal was also mined in the area. Today, as it was prior to 1861, the area is a wilderness seemingly in the middle of nowhere. This one place study attempts to draw together whatever information can be found about the individuals and families at the Diggings. It aims to build a picture of the social fabric of the place over time through the lives and interactions of those individuals and families who lived and worked there.

Timeframe

1861-1900

Population

Uncertain at this stage but during the years of this study there would have been several thousand miners (gold and coal), including about 600 Chinese gold miners.
