Gatliff Buildings, Westminster One-Place Study

As Gatliff Close marks its 160th anniversary in 2027, this One-Place Study explores the history of the place and the people who called it home.

Originally known as Gatliff Buildings, the estate was developed between 1865 and 1867 by an arrangement between Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster KG PC, and the Metropolitan Association for Improving the Dwellings of the Industrious Classes. Built to accommodate 149 families, it opened in May 1867 and was fully occupied by June, becoming home to generations of families.

The Study brings together local history and family history to explore former residents, family connections, and community life within their wider historical context. Its aim is to preserve and share the history of Gatliff Buildings and Gatliff Close.

Anyone with a connection to the place is invited to contribute to the Study. Contributions of family histories, photographs, and other historical material are warmly welcomed.
