Study Description

The Asylum for the Education of Deaf and Dumb Children of the Poor (later The Royal School for Deaf Children, Margate) originally opened in 1792 on the Old Kent Road, Bermondsey. It opened with just 6 children, 3 girls and 3 boys. By the time of its first centenary more than 4,000 deaf children had been through its doors.

I am beginning my study with pupils who were at the school on the 1891 and 1991 censuses. In time, I will look to extend the time frame.

Timeframe

Initially 1891-1901. However will look to extend from 1792 to 1924 over time.

Population

1901 – approx 300 pupils.
