Study Description

For three years between 2021 and 2024, Wigan Local History and Heritage Society has been involved in the research of the King Street Heritage Action Zone and has helped to uncover the rich history of the area.

The stories of the buildings, and the people who used them, are published on our website and can also be found on the Wigan Building Preservation Trust website.

All the buildings researched have had a part to play in the history and heritage of the town.

Our research uncovered the history of the people who used the buildings, the people who lived in them, worked in them, shopped in them, or had a drink in them. They are all part of the story.

The people of the Street and the families closely associated with its development were the movers and shakers of its time.

After being made a High Street Heritage Action Zone by Historic England it was hoped this would help to give the King Street area the recognition, and the lift it deserves.

Even though the project ended in March 2024, the work still continues between Wigan Council and the building owners to create a sustainable future for the historic buildings in King Street.
