Study Description

This study summarises the people and places associated with the Springhill area of Higher Cloughfold, Rossendale, Lancashire. It started as a history of one house and now covers much of Higher Cloughfold.

Springhill House itself was built around 1820 for the colliery owner, John Ashworth. Many of the adjacent properties housed his estate workers, with Ashworth and his family soon becoming major local landowners.

Some of the Springhill properties date back to the mid-seventeenth century and the area has close links with seventeenth century dissenting faith.
