Study Description

My purpose is to research and produce a written report on the history of Castle Yard, Highgate, London N6. It is of particular interest to me because some of my ancestors lived there. It may be of interest to others who can trace their family back to people who lived there and also to researchers and locals interested in the history of Highgate generally.
My current plan is to:

    • Investigate the origins of the street itself
    • Try to find out who built the houses – they are a row of 11 terraced houses
    • Look at old maps to see what was there before
    • Research the people living there in each census and see if any conclusions can be drawn or patterns identified about the population there and how it changed over time, including:
      • What sort of family groups did they live in?
      • Where did they come from?
      • What work did they do and where?
      • Where did they go to school?
      • What other activities might they have been involved in?
      • Research life in Highgate more generally, as it relates to the people living in the street, from published literature

Timeframe

Early 1800s to present primarily using data from censuses from 1841 through to 1939 register.

Population

 73 in 1871.
