This study, which I am coordinating on behalf of the Worcester u3a Genealogy Group, started as a way for members of the group who did not have Worcestershire ancestors to practice their family history skills by investigating families living in the street. We have only investigated a few families as yet but hope to slowly grow the study.
Edgar Street is one of Worcester’s older streets, near the cathedral. There are currently 15 houses in the street (was 17), with most of the houses dating from Georgian times, though built on the footprints of earlier houses. The sizes of the houses vary, as do the occupations of the previous occupants, who include schoolmasters, bakers, artists, glove manufacturers, musicians (even Elgar briefly, though as a baby!) and many other professions.
There are plenty of mentions of the street and its inhabitants in the local newspapers, and you can find out a bit more about Edgar Street in the article I wrote for Destinations in March 2023, based on my newspaper researches.
Do contact me if you want to know more, have a connection to the street or if you are conducting a similar street study, especially if it is being done as a group project.
