I intend to conduct an OPS of the parish of Muirkirk. This is a small parish in Ayrshire, comprising the village of Muirkirk itself, and the village of Glenbuck, which is smaller but more famous, being the birthplace of Bill Shankly. It is of interest to me, as it is my mother’s birthplace, and almost all of her mother’s family came from there. I have already started work by transcribing the headstones in the cemeteries (a task that had, admittedly, mostly been done by a commercial enterprise). In addition, there is a collated volume of pages from the local newspaper, the Muirkirk Advertiser, which includes some BMD information as well as local news studies. I also have a great deal of other supporting information collected during my personal research. The village (Glenbuck is long gone) also has an active Facebook group that occasionally shares historical stories and reminiscences.
Timeframe
I would ultimately like to cover the entire history of the village, although any information I publish would follow Scotland’s People’s closure periods of 100/75/50 years for B/M/D.
Population
The population of the parish peaked at around 5000 at the 1901 census. Nowadays, the village is much smaller, and has a population of less than 2000.
