When I paid off my mortgage I was given a large bundle of vellum – the deeds of the house I have now lived in for fifty years. I discovered that it was bought by David Kedie Whytt, a wine and spirit dealer, purser and naval agent in the Napoleonic Navy and, finally, bookseller. This set off three decades of research into the people who have lived in the house and the street and their world-wide connections. A resultant book “10 Scotland Street – an opinionated history of one house over two centuries” with a foreword by Val McDermid, will be launched at Toppings Edinburgh, on 1st December 2023.
