Could I write the first blog post for our new society?........ Well I could, but what a responsibility! What to say? In the future, this blog will be about the latest developments in one-place studies, new resources, events and society news. Hopefully, it will be the place where you hear things first. At the moment though, we are so new that there is nothing to add that is not in the ‘About Us’ section or on our resources pages.

To whet your appetite, I will direct you to a favourite website of mine, full of goodies for British OPSs. The Vision of Britain website www.visionofbritain.org.uk gives you access to maps, population statistics, travelogues that mention your study area and historical photographs.

One-place studies help to answer so many questions:-

  • Who used to live in my street?
  • Where would the locals have worshipped?
  • How large were the farms in this area and what did they produce?

Inevitably, they raise as many questions as they answer:-

  • Where was the blacksmith’s shop?
  • What are the origins of the street names?
  • Why would two small villages, ten miles from each other, have such different migration patterns?

If you have read this far, you must have some interest in our exciting new venture. I hope you will want to join us in the fascinating and absorbing journey that is the creation of a one-place study. Do take part, everything you find is about your community and our past.
