16 new member websites – wow! Some are new websites created by new members, other are new sites from members who have been with us for a while, and the rest are established sites created by one-placers who have joined the Society in the last few months. Let’s take a tour and visit places in Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland and Italy…

St Mary's Roman Catholic church at Axedale

Axedale in Victoria, Australia (Jenny Jones)

Axedale – Then and Now is the title of Jenny’s one-place study website, which was launched back in November 2014. Since then, Jenny has added nearly a hundred blog posts looking at all aspects of Axedale and its people, past and present, using newspaper articles, monumental inscriptions, interviews with locals and other sources.

Batley, St Mary of the Angels RC Church, War Memorial and wider parish in West Yorkshire, England (Jane Roberts)

Jane has been blogging about Batley and her own family history for some time, on her Past To Present Genealogy website. She began her OPS (and joined the Society) in October this year after completing the Introduction to One-Place Studies course run by Pharos Teaching & Tutoring. Batley was too big a place to take on in its entirety, hence Jane’s focus on the community associated with Batley St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, and in particular those named on its war memorial. For an introduction to the study, see About my St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church War Memorial One-Place Study.

Burnley in Lancashire, England (Joanne Kenyon)

One-place studies for Burnley and also Clitheroe (see below) have only been registered with us very recently, but Joanne already has a page on her website for each of them. Here's the page for her Burnley One Place Study. [This entry updated 21 Jan 2021]

Childs Ercall in Shropshire, England (Margaret Ford)

This is the first of two one-place studies in Shropshire which Margaret has registered with us (see also Tibberton below). Her Childs Ercall one place study website includes the beginnings of Margaret’s parish register transcriptions, a photos page and a look at the Adams family who were resident in parish around 1837 – 1841.

A view over Clitheroe

Clitheroe in Lancashire, England (Joanne Kenyon)

Clitheroe One Place Study is the second of two new one-place studies launched, and registered with us, by Joanne (see also Burnley OPS above). [This entry updated 21 Jan 2021]

Eccles Old Road in Greater Manchester, England (Lesley Hoyes)

“The Eccles Old Road website focuses on the 2.2 miles of the current A576 in the City of Salford stretching from Pendleton in the East to Gilda Brook in the West. Part of the Township of Pendleton until 1853, the road has been known variously as  Sandy Lane, Broomhouse Lane, Eccles Road and the High Road to Warrington.” What that text, taken from the Eccles Old Road website, doesn’t adequately convey is what a little gem the site is! Beautifully put together, with lots of pictorial content including maps, it is well worth a visit.

Killedan in County Mayo, Ireland (Daniel’s Genealogy)

A teenage genealogist with a passion for helping others, Daniel has many so many strings to his bow that it’s practically a musical instrument in its own right! To add to all his other projects (including Brick Wall Busters Hour and The Hidden Branch) – and his homework – Daniel has also started a one-place study of the townland in County Mayo where many of his ancestors lived. Still in its early stages, Daniel’s Killedan One Place Study website currently has the beginnings of his 1901 census transcription for the townland.

Grand Union Canal at Long Buckby Wharf

Long Buckby Wharf in Northamptonshire, England (Julie Groom)

Although it was only started about six months ago, Julie’s Long Buckby Wharf One Place Study website already has 25 blog posts and over a dozen pages. Between them these cover a wide range of subjects, which can be seen in the Category menu on the right-hand side of each page. Include are some great analyses of census data, along with transcriptions, for 1841 and 1851 so far.

Manor View, Finchley in Greater London, England (Sue Mastell)

Sue began collecting information about Manor View around seven years ago – being confined to her home because of Covid-19 restrictions this year gave her the opportunity to pull it all together and create a history of Manor View, Finchley. Find out all about Finchley Manor House, its occupants, the relationship between the Manor House and Manor View, who lived in the houses of Manor View, and the social aspects of living there.

New Fishbourne in West Sussex, England (Steve Pickthall)

New Fishbourne One Place Study is the OPS website of our very own webmaster! Check out Records (parish registers, census, wills & probate, trade directories, news, and miscellaneous), History (business, church, maps, mills, pubs, and schools) and People (presented via TNG).

Rutherglen Cemetery

Rutherglen Cemetery in Lanarkshire, Scotland (Jane Barton)

This new one-place study is focussing initially on the World War 1 Rutherglen Cemetery CWGC war graves. It uses Google Maps to show the locations of the graves and present information about the men commemorated – enabling a WW1 war graves walk to be taken. 14 men are included so far, with a further 73 graves to be researched. Jane hopes that that this study will become a community endeavour.

San Giorgio della Richinvelda in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy (Anna Darelli-Anderson)

Sometimes, while researching their family history, people find that they have clusters of ancestors from a particular locality. They then begin to gather and analyse records relating to that place, without realising they have begun a one-place study – until they find us! That’s what happened to Anna, whose research has become the San Giorgio della Richinvelda One-Place Study. Anna is currently transcribing birth, marriage and death records for the commune, and although she has not yet registered them she also has three additional one-place studies under way (two in Italy and one in the USA), links to which can be found on her One-Place Studies Homepage.

San Marzano Oliveto in Piedmont, Italy (Daniel Smith-Ramos)

Daniel has ancestors from England, Wales, Spain, the United States – and from a certain village in Italy! His connection to San Marzano Oliveto is through his great-grandmother Giovanna, who was part of a large family which had roots in the village going back at least two centuries. Through his San Marzano Oliveto One Place Study Daniel hopes to find out more about his ancestors there and the wider community of which they were a part.

A view of The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset – Lucy Sarson

The Crescent, Taunton in Somerset, England (Lucy Sarson)

The Crescent is a well-known Taunton street which began as a residential development at the beginning of the 1800s. In more recent times however the buildings have all been converted to business use; and even more recently they attracted Lucy’s interest – she began her study of The Crescent in 2018. The first blog post on One Place Study of The Crescent in Taunton, Somerset, England appeared on April 18th and since then Lucy has added a further 28, sharing details of her research on the street, its properties, and their occupants.

Thorpe Bassett in North Yorkshire, England (Pam Smith)

Pam has recently begun to expand her one-place study of Rillington by taking on the neighbouring parish of Thorpe Bassett too! That OPS is in its early stages, but it has a Thorpe Bassett OPS web page created with Name and Place, which provides details of the study and a contact form.

Tibberton in Shropshire, England (Margaret Ford)

This is Margaret’s second OPS (see Childs Ercall above), and the Tibberton Shropshire One Place Study website is in its very early stages of development. So far, there is an introduction to the parish and a note about the Tibberton parish registers.

That concludes this round-up of member website news – I will try not to leave it so long before the next one! If I missed a new development on your one-place study website, (1) sorry! and (2) let me know.
