Our 10th anniversary annual conference will take place online on 25th November over Zoom. It is free to members and we feel offers a great programme covering all time zones. The theme is ‘mapping our places’.

First up is Miles Meyer who is looking at how researchers can use mapping tools to help analyse our communities’ histories. Chris Fleet will discuss using map collections in our One-Place Studies, concentrating on the excellent and exhaustive collection of the National Library of Scotland – a must for those of us with UK places but the principles go far wider than the UK. Two case studies follow, firstly Fred Kerr discussing the use of Platt maps in studying Kerr Station, wherever and Prof Angus Winchester discussing how field names can help us visualise places with particular reference to north Cumbria. Formal proceedings conclude with Dr Sophie Kay discussing ‘Mapping alchemy for One-Place studies’. Some of us may have heard her excellent genealogy-based talk on mapping alchemy, Sophie has kindly re-written this with a particular focus on One-Place studies. As is rapidly becoming a tradition, there will be online chat over Zoom before and after the presentations.

Proceedings include the Society’s AGM to which all members are invited.

Please note that the date is a week later than previously. This is to avoid a clash with the Family History Federation’s Really Useful show which in turn has been put back a week in order to avoid a clash with the UK Remembrance weekend…
