Central Bohemia is one the thirteen regions (along with capital city of Prague) that the modern day Czech Republic was divided into in the year 2000. Every region has its own elected regional assembly and a regional governor. There are seventy-six older districts which lost most of their importance in 1999 in an administrative reform; they remain as territorial divisions and seats of various branches of state administration.

It is the largest region in the Czech Republic with an area of over 11,000 square kilometres, completely surrounding the city of Prague region. It has a population of almost 1.4 million people.

The region industries include mechanical engineering, chemical industry and the food industry. The north-eastern area has a large amount of agriculture, mostly crop production.
