This One Place Study began with a journal. I’m a writer, archivist and curator and spent years keeping close notes on the hedgerow species around the village, the canopy above, the birds, the seasonal changes. That attention led, almost inevitably, to the graveyard at St Mary’s Church. The names on the stones prompted questions. Who were these people? What were their lives like? Census records followed. Then family trees, local stories, breadcrumb trails through the parish’s past.
Gilcrux (pronounced gil-cruise) is a small Cumbrian parish. There’s a comprehensive one place study in the making, an archive to keep its story alive. Not just the landowners and the clergy, but everyone. Census records with breadcrumb trails, family histories, photographs, and the kind of everyday detail that never makes it into official history books. The collection grows with the community. It is a living archive. It will never be finished. And that’s the point.
